Selecting a script for your website

July 12th, 2008

If you have a large number of websites, using scripts makes it simple to update and maintain the websites.
Some of the factors to be considered while selecting and installing scripts are:
1. Whether the scripts are open source / free.
For a single website, you can afford to spend money on custom scripts or pay a license fee. But if you have a large number of websites, even the cost of cheap licensed software can add up.
A large number of open source scripts are available for different applications.

2. Ease of installation: Most webhosts offer CPanel hosting which has Fantastico bundled with it. Many open source applications like Wordpress, CMS, Forums can be installed and uninstalled with a few clicks using Fantastico and upgrades are also automated.

3. Disk and database space used : Some applications take up a lot of disk space, so this has to be considered if multiple domains are hosted on a single account.

4. Ease of modification: if you wish to include advertising on the website, you should be able to modify the source code easily. If the source code is encrypted, it is difficult to even make minor modifications.
